About AltDraft
What if teams could draft again, knowing what we know now?
What We Do
AltDraft is a sports analytics platform that re-drafts historical NFL and NBA drafts using a proprietary 7-factor contextual scoring formula. Unlike traditional re-drafts that simply reorder players by career success, we calculate what would have happened if players landed in different situations.
The same quarterback behind a bad offensive line, with poor coaching, and no weapons produces vastly different results than that same player in an optimal environment. Context isn't just important — it's everything.
The 7 Factors
Every player-team combination receives a Fit Score (0-100) based on these weighted factors:
Offensive Line Quality
20%Pass protection and run blocking capability. Critical for QB and RB development.
Position Development History
20%Does this franchise actually develop players at this position? Historical track record speaks louder than promises.
Offensive Coordinator / Play Caller
18%Scheme fit and coordinator track record. The right system unlocks potential; the wrong one buries talent.
Skill Weapons & Supporting Cast
15%Quality of receivers, tight ends, running backs, and defensive teammates around the player.
Head Coach
12%Leadership quality, player development culture, and organizational stability.
Draft Position Pressure
8%Pick slot expectations and media market scrutiny. Top-5 picks get shorter leashes.
Ownership & Front Office
7%Organizational stability, investment in player development, and front office competence.
💡 Position-specific weighting: A quarterback cares more about offensive line quality than a cornerback does. Our formula adjusts factor weights based on position requirements.
Why We Exist
Traditional sports analysis treats draft picks like static assets that can be rearranged without consequence. We reject that premise.
"What if they went somewhere else?" isn't just a fun hypothetical — it's the question that reveals how much of player development is environmental vs. innate talent. Tom Brady in Cleveland isn't Tom Brady. Giannis in Sacramento isn't a two-time MVP.
We built AltDraft to surface these truths with data-driven analysis, not gut feelings.
Who's Behind This
AltDraft started as one person's obsession with a simple question: "What if context mattered as much as talent?" Years of arguing about busts and steals with friends led to a realization — nobody was actually scoring the situationsplayers landed in.
So the 7-factor formula was born. What began as a spreadsheet became a methodology, and the methodology became AltDraft. One person's side project turned into 45+ re-drafted classes across two leagues.
The competitive advantage is the coordinator and coaching tree research — original analysis tracking which offensive coordinators, defensive coordinators, and position coaches actually develop talent vs. which ones destroy it. Combined with public data sources (Pro Football Reference, Basketball Reference, EPA metrics) and proprietary research, every Fit Score and re-draft ranking tells a story the raw stats alone never could.
Data Through 2024
All analysis and re-drafts reflect data through the 2024 NFL and NBA seasons. Player projections, context scores, and team environment ratings are based on historical performance up to that point.
